When you move up from an AR15 to an AR10, you're only increasing the weight and the forces at play. It will work for a few hundred, or maybe a few thousand rounds, but every time you fire it, the direct gas impingement system will be blasting the polymer with hot gasses and progressively weakening it. Aluminum is strong enough to do it tens of thousands of times, polymer is not. This is where most polymer lower receivers fail on AR15's it's a small amount of material responsible for holding the rifle together under the force of recoil. The area that accepts the receiver extension relies on the strength of a rigid metal. If they were, the lower of an AR would have different geometry that is appropriate for distributing the loads across a weaker material. The SCAR was designed with a Polymer lower, and uses a piston system rather than a system that dumps hot gasses into the receiver space.ĪR's were not designed to use polymer as the material for the lower receiver. The PTR is super reliable and has never failed me, then again neither has the FAL. The FAL has an adjustable gas system so you can use different loads without worry. The FAL leaves the brass in good shape and close by. The PTR will throw your brass 20+ feet at about 2 o'clock and dent the side. The PTR uses a roller delayed blowback system when the FAL uses a short stroke piston. I have a factory bipod built into the hand gaurd which is awesome.īoth are great but completely different in operation. There are a lot of very stable replacement covers with pic rails. The standard version comes with a steel dust cover. The DSA FAL is going to cost a bit more and the mags are about $20-25. The model I got (A3S) comes with a match grade barrel. Surplus furniture can be found easily and is inexpensive. The PTR is modeled after the G3 and mags can be found for $3. Not that there is anything wrong with a claw mount, just one less piece to fail. They have models with a welded rail which eliminates the need for a claw mount. If you get a PTR consider your optic choice in advance. I don't have experience with a scar but I do have a DSA SA58 and a PTR.
